The catch has been sold. With rollers and bamboo poles, a family pushes their boat to the upper part of the beach. Three generations work to gether—the ones back from the sea with long sleeves to protect them from the midday sun and the cold of the night, children in T-shirts from the village a few metres away and the elders with their shoulders wrapped in kain as if to protect them from the weight of the years. Hope and weariness are mixed—the happy stance of the girl and the boys literally shouldering their share. Children such as those that he paints here, were Fee Ming’s playmates. |
