FRIDAY MARKET, 1996
56 x 76 cm
Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond G. Viault
Minnesota, USA

The scene is at the corner of a weekly market where orang ulu—the people from up the river, sell their products to other country folks. Their clothing is simple. One woman has even let her veil fall on her back. Still, her hair is carefully combed. The customers first stand, looking for awhile, then bend to touch the fish or the fruit, and finally squat to bargain. They take their time—something that everyone has here—more than money.
