It is ten o’clock in the morning. The tropical light, already very strong, heralds the bright colours of the batik, which in turn heralds the soft brown of the wood. Taken out of the intimacy of the night, printed flora and arabesques bask in the sun. A chequered bolster throws its long shadow over the kepala kain—the head of a sarong painted in diagonal stripes of warm reds, greens and blues filled with flowers.
